Rules for courses

In addition to the thesis work, the doctoral studies include a course component that aims at providing general knowledge of areas relevant to research and science, in-depth knowledge of the subject area, and skills and competences preparing you for your future research career.

The scope of the course component differs between the various research subjects and is regulated in the different General Study Syllabi. The General Study Syllabi also states which courses are mandatory for the education and degree.

What courses you should include in your studies are determined by you in consultation with your Main Supervisor and Examiner and established in your Individual Study Plan.

Types of courses

There are various courses that may be included in your course component.

  1. General doctoral courses are given as ordinary courses, but on a third cycle level, at BTH or at another university.
  2. Individual doctoral courses are created by the doctoral students Supervisor and can take the form of more individual studies but result in course credits.
  3. Courses on a first or second cycle (basic or advanced) level can be included in the doctoral studies if the Supervisor decides that they are necessary for supplementing the education.

Planning for courses

The courses included in the doctoral studies should be scheduled and planned for, together with the Supervisors and Examiner, in the Individual Study Plan.

Reporting courses

When you have finished a course, it should be reported to the Research Administration in order to be registered in Ladok, the study documentation system.

It is always your Examiner who values the credits of the doctoral course and decides what courses and credits that can be accredited to your doctoral education.

In cases where you have completed courses before being admitted to doctoral studies at BTH, such as at a Masters level, that is to be included in your course component, a special form of accrediting should be used. Credits are always decided by the Examiner.
